VAIDS: FG warns defaulters, says they ‘ll be exposed
Kemi Adeosun

Wealthy Nigerians who do not take advantage of the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) to regularize their tax status, would face serious consequences, the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has warned.

According to her, the Federal Government has compiled data on property, bank accounts, shareholdings and other income sources of individuals and corporate entities.

Adeosun issued the threat in Enugu on Thursday during the hosting of VAIDS by the Enugu State government  where the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Tunde Fowler, was represented by Executive Secretary, Joint Tax Board (JTB), Oseni Elamah.

VAIDS: FG warns defaulters, says they ‘ll be exposed
Kemi Adeosun

The event was attended by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, members of the State Executive Council, legislature and traditional rulers.

Also present were representives of the business community in Enugu state including Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Nsukka Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NCCIMA), bank executives, lawyers, market traders, electronic dealers, hospital owners, school owners and transport owners associations.

The scheme, which provides a time-limited opportunity for tax defaulters to declare their indebtedness, ends on 31 March.

While, those who declare regularised their tax payment would be free of tax audits, payment of interests and penalties on owed taxes as well as prosecution, failure to declare at the expiration of the window will attract severe penalties and prosecution.

Adeosun said VAIDS was conceived to allow Nigerian companies and individuals to do what right for the country, right for Enugu State and right for one another.

She said: “From our records, there seems to be a few big men and big women from this part of the country, who may need to think very carefully about making a VAIDS declaration. We have been compiling data on property, bank accounts, shareholdings and other sources which suggest that many people have not been paying the right taxes. VAIDS is an opportunity to regularise.”

The minister added that huge sums of money have been moved out of Nigeria without the owners paying a kobo in tax.

Adeosun vowed that those who have moved money out of the country without paying taxes would be fished out.

She said: “The good news for government, which is bad news for the tax evaders, is that globally, nations have agreed to share data under the Automatic Exchange of Information. This means that sitting at our desks in Abuja, we are getting information about assets that the owners thought were well hidden from the tax authorities.

“As you know, Nigerians are entitled to keep their wealth anywhere in the world, including under their mattress, but what the law requires is that they pay tax on their income as they earn it.”

While declaring that Nigeria is proud of her millionaires, billionaires and even trillionaires and want many more emerge, the minister however, stated that the government wants everyone to pay the right taxes for the development of the country.

Adeosun however expressed reservation that Nigeria has a very poor scorecard in tax payment.

“When oil came, we abandoned the old systems of tax collection that provided most of our infrastructure since colonial days. Currently, we have just 14million taxpayers  out of 70million, who are economically active. So many who should be paying are not paying anything. Incidentally, we have 74million registered voters.

“Also, some who are paying something are not paying the correct amount. It may seem smart for a businessman to go and get a tax clearance certificate for N200,00 when he earns millions, but I can tell you without fear of contradiction, that not only is this illegal, but such people are cheating themselves and future generations,” she said.

The parley, which holds at Base Event Centre, is conceived to provide information on the scheme to members of the business community and other taxpayers on how to comply with VAIDS.

The scheme, which began last July, offers a time-limited opportunity for tax debtors to truthfully declare their indebtedness to the appropriate tax authorities and have the benefit of spreading payment over a maximum three-year period. VAIDS seeks to institute a culture of voluntary tax compliance, yield more money to the government for the country’s development and reduce reliance on oil revenue.

An estimated $1billion is expected to be realized from the implementation of VAIDS, which gives room to tax defaulters to declare before the end of the window on 31 March.

The Federal Government has repeatedly stated that there will no extension of the deadline and has vowed that non-declarers will face prosecution at the end of window. It has also continued to advise tax debtors to take advantage of the opportunity offered by VAIDS, as they would be find through technology and data.

Since the scheme was launched, it has collected income and transaction data of about 10 million Nigerians, with more still being collected for analysis that would determine their tax status. Data have been collected from state and federal tax authorities, payment platforms, Nigeria Customs Service, Central Bank of Nigeria, Corporate Affairs Commission, banks, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries as well as state land registries.

Afegbua

Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris has ordered the arrest of the controversial spokesman of former Military President Ibrahim Babangida should he fail to turn himself up within 24 hours.

Afegua is wanted for ” issuing a fake statement.”

Afegbua in the purported statement quoted the former military ruler as saying President Muhammadu Buhari should not seek reelection.

But the former president denied it and issued another one which he personally signed.

But Afegbua insisted on the one he issued as the authentic.

A government source, who does not want his name in print, confirmed that the IGP had ordered Afegbua’s arrest within24 hours.

Controversy as another letter has been reported to have emanated from the camp of former Military President, Ibrahim Babaginda, saying that he denounced his initial letter where he said that President Muhammadu Buhari should not contest for 2019 election saying that ‘the next election in 2019 therefore presents us a unique opportunity to reinvent the will and provoke fresh leadership that would immediately begin the process of healing the wounds in the land and ensuring that the wishes and aspirations of the people are realized in building and sustaining national cohesion and consensus.

“I pray the Almighty Allah grant us the gift of good life to witness that glorious dawn in 2019. Amen. I have not written an open letter to the President, I have just shared my thoughts with fellow compatriots on the need to enthrone younger blood into the mainstream of our political leadership starting from 2019.”

But in the new letter Babaginda denounced the initial letter saying that it is untrue, it is in its entirety, an inaccurate representation of his view of the state of our dear Nation. Below is the new letter:

“My attention has been drawn to a report making rounds especially online in which I was quoted as advising Nigerians not to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in the coming 2019 election. Not only is the said statement untrue, it is in its entirety, an inaccurate representation of my view of the state of our dear Nation.

“As a former President and an elder statesman, I have existing communication channels through which I reach out to President Muhammadu Buhari on topical issues of national importance, should there be the need so to do.

“The media, both online or mainstream and indeed the unsuspecting public are advised to disregard such false reports. Thank you and God Bless you all.”
